What Are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are often referred to as dental veneers or porcelain veneers. They are thin shells of high-quality materials, like porcelain, that are custom-made to fit onto the front-facing surface of your teeth. Once bonded in place, they can effortlessly conceal several imperfections, including permanent discoloration. Usually, the entire process – from the consultation to the final placement – can be completed in just two or three visits, too!
The Process of Getting Veneers
The first step is scheduling a consultation with one of our talented, meticulous, and experienced dentists, Dr. Cooper or Dr. Harper, so they can determine if veneers are the best cosmetic dental treatment for you. If that’s the case, then they will work with you to solidify the details of your treatment plan, including how many veneers you need to achieve the results you desire. Then, they will prep your teeth and provide you with a set of temporary veneers.
It typically takes a few weeks for the artisans at the lab to create your final veneers. Once they arrive at our office, we will inspect them to make sure they are perfect and schedule your last appointment. During this visit, we will remove your temporary veneers, bond your final ones in place, and give them a good polish. After that, the smile you’ve been dreaming of will be yours!
The Benefits of Veneers
Veneers are widely loved for several reasons, including:
- The treatment process can usually be completed in 2-3 visits
- They can conceal multiple imperfections
- They are crafted from stain-resistant materials, like dental porcelain
- They can last for 10+ years with proper care
- The size, shape, and shade of each one can be customized
Understanding the Cost of Veneers
Usually, dental insurance providers don’t cover the cost of treatments that aren’t “medically necessary,” including veneers. Fortunately, there is another way you can make the price more affordable: CareCredit. This trusted third-party financier offers convenient payment plans (and several have little-to-no interest attached). As a result, you don’t need to pay for the entire cost in one lump sum!
Veneer FAQs
Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?
You’ll be able to eat pretty much anything you want with your permanent veneers (though limiting treats with dark pigments will help them look whiter for longer). Temporary veneers, however, aren’t as durable.
To avoid damaging or accidentally pulling off your temporaries, it’s best to avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods. Caramel, taffy, popcorn kernels, celery, and hard pretzels are good examples of what not to eat. Trying to tear corn off the cob or biting into an apple could also compromise your temporary veneers.
Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?
It depends. Veneers can’t actually change the position or alignment of your teeth in the way that orthodontics can, so if you have significant bite issues or wide gaps, veneers likely won’t be an effective treatment. But if your concerns are minor and mostly about aesthetics, then veneers could very well be used to conceal dental gaps or create a more even chewing surface.
Let your cosmetic dentist in Fort Smith know what you’re hoping to correct, and they’ll be able to tell you whether veneers would be a good option for you and your smile.
How Many Veneers Will I Need?
Some patients only need one veneer in order to achieve their smile goals. Others need as many as 12! It simply depends on the dental flaws you’re hoping to conceal. Since the purpose of veneers in Fort Smith is to give all of your visible teeth a seamless appearance, we’ll provide you with however many are needed in order to perfect your smile.
Rest assured, we’ll keep you well-informed about how many veneers you’ll need and what your treatment costs will look like.
Can You Whiten Veneers?
The chemicals used in teeth whitening agents are specially formulated to slip through the pours in dental enamel. Because porcelain veneers have a different composition, the agents don’t work as effectively and can’t penetrate the surface in order to remove stains.
There is a silver lining, though – if your veneers are looking discolored, we might be able to brighten them with a simple polishing. Otherwise, we could always replace your veneers entirely, and can even color-match the new set to blend in with the whitening results of your natural teeth. It’s important to feel like your smile is attractive, so don’t hesitate to let us know if you’re no longer satisfied with how your veneers look!
Do Veneers Feel Like Real Teeth?
Yes – and if they don’t, you may need an adjustment. After removing a tiny sliver of dental enamel, your customized veneers should fit to your teeth like a glove. The new shape of your smile might feel strange at first, but within a week or two you should get used to it and will hardly notice that your veneers are there. Thanks to the quality of our porcelain materials, even the surface texture of your veneers should feel quite natural.
Discomfort and difficulties chewing can be a sign that your veneers don’t fit quite right or are coming loose from the adhesive. If your bite feels off, please let us know so we can investigate and fix the issue!
